With the aim to empower Indian prisoners to attain an honest living, designer Abhishek Dutta launched Parole, a sustainable clothing brand that has been produced by both
male and female inmates of Indian prisons. The label, which have
been in the making for the last two years. “It was an interesting project proposed by the West
Bengal government correctional home” started as a project for skill development of the inmates slowly turned in a production unit giving way to an alternative income for the inmates during their conviction.
A group of 40 male inmates from the Presidency Central Correctional Home
and 12 female inmates from the Alipore Women’s Correctional Home have been working on
producing these designs since 2017. The inmates would keep getting released on parole and a new batch would keep coming in, thus rendering the task of training them for a particular established work process difficult and a constant challenge.
